A gang investigation led to a vehicle stop by two veteran Huntington Beach police officers who killed two men in Westminster, authorities said Wednesday.
The officers saw a woman and two men enter a four-door Lexus in Huntington Beach and stopped the vehicle Tuesday afternoon when it entered neighboring Westminster, said the Orange County Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the incident.
"The woman driver exited the car and police subsequently heard gunfire from inside the vehicle," the department said in a statement. "Two officers, believing they were being fired upon, returned fire."
The two adult males were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators recovered a .40-caliber handgun inside the Lexus, authorities said.

The statement did not say whether either of the men pointed a gun at  the officers, who called for backup before stopping the vehicle.
The officers names were not released, but they were described as veterans with more than 20 years experience in law enforcement. They were placed on administrative leave, which authorities said is routine after an officer-involved shooting.
