Rally to support Sheriff Baca planned outside Men's Central Jail
Community groups and clergy planned Monday morning to rally in front of the Men's Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles to show their support for beleaguered L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca.
Jean Dale Glass, a public relations representative speaking on behalf of the groups, said members support Baca because of his history of community involvement, including implementing education programs in the jails and reaching out to religious institutions.
"He just has a lot of concern for the community," she said.
The pro-Baca rally comes as the Los Angeles County jails are at the center of a widening scandal over alleged mistreatment of inmates.
The FBI is investigating reports of abuse and other misconduct, and the U.S. attorney's office recently demanded a large volume of documents on deputies and others working in the jail, including reports of force used on inmates.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, citing alleged abuse in the jails, has called for Baca's resignation.
Glass said she expected about 300 Baca supporters to rally at 10 a.m. outside the jail.
